Named the way people describe them rather than the way a parts catalog would. If two of these sound like your machine, start with the one that mentions the noise, the light or the water — those narrow fastest.

    A drawer that finishes — or stops and beeps — with water still in it. The maker publishes a code for this and publishes the causes with it, and both of them are things you can look at yourself before anybody is called.

    DishDrawer is leaking water

    Water appearing at the front of the machine while the inside looks perfectly normal. On a drawer that is the expected shape of a leak, because the seal is at the top and whatever escapes it runs down the outside.

    These machines have no numeric display, so they report by flashing. Which lights are flashing is the diagnosis, and it is the one piece of evidence that vanishes the moment somebody switches the machine off.

    Dishes coming out dirty

    A cycle that completes normally and leaves food on the plates. Almost always water — how much arrives, how hot it is, and whether the spray arm can move it around — rather than anything electronic.

    DishDrawer will not start

    A drawer that lights up and refuses to run, or one that does not light at all. Four free causes before any part, and one of them — the machine having shut itself down on purpose — is the one people never guess.

    DishDrawer will not open

    A drawer that stays closed after a cycle has finished. This is the one symptom on this site where the wrong ten seconds turns a small repair into a large one, so the first instruction is: do not pull on it.

    Drying on these machines is done with residual heat and a fan rather than a big element, which makes it more sensitive to rinse aid, to loading and to the program than a conventional dishwasher is. Some of what people report here is the machine working as designed.

    The fresh-food compartment drifting up while the freezer stays cold. That combination is good news more often than not, because a working freezer proves the sealed system is doing its job and puts the problem somewhere ordinary.

    The most-linked refrigeration article this maker publishes — it appears on forty-nine of its models — and the answer is usually that the machine is working correctly. Which is worth saying plainly before anybody spends anything.

    Ice cream that will not set, bags that have gone pliable, or a freezer that is holding a few degrees too warm without ever alarming. It rarely fails all at once — it drifts, which is why people notice it in the food before they notice it in the machine.

    Ice maker not making ice

    Four complaints that arrive as one: nothing at all, too slowly, cubes too small, or ice that tastes wrong. The first two things to check are the filter and the water pressure reaching the machine, not the ice maker.

    These machines are quiet, which means a new sound stands out — and the maker publishes articles on gasket noise, fan noise and ice maker noise because most of what gets reported is normal. What matters is whether the sound is new, not whether it is loud.

    For wine, two degrees is a symptom rather than a rounding error. A cabinet that sits steadily off, or one that runs continuously without arriving, is telling you about a sensor, a fan, a seal or the air around its condenser.

  • A hand gripping a heavy stainless control dial on the front of a cooking appliance, knuckles tight as if turning something stiff, the fascia brushed and blank.

    Cooktop dials difficult to turn

    The complaint this maker's own cooktop owners raise more than any other — its article is linked from sixty-one models — and it is a maintenance repair rather than a breakdown. The one thing worth doing meanwhile is not forcing it.

    • It got gradually harder over a year or two
    • A dial that has started to feel gritty

  • A gas burner with its cap slightly off-seated and no flame, the igniter electrode clearly visible beside the ports, a hand reaching in to lift the cap.

    A burner that sparks and never catches. The good news is in the symptom itself: if it is sparking, the ignition side is alive, and the problem is gas reaching the burner or the burner itself — which is very often something you can put right in five minutes.

    Flame goes out on the low setting

    The most-linked freestanding cooker article this maker publishes. A burner that is perfect on high and will not stay lit turned down is telling you something specific, and it is not the gas supply.

    Oven display is on but it does not heat

    One of the maker's most-linked oven articles, and a real spread of causes: an element, the temperature sensor, the relay that switches the element, or a thermal cut-out that did its job after a self-clean and has not reset.

    Oven door locked after a self-clean cycle

    A door that will not release when the cycle has finished. The lock is driven by temperature rather than by a timer, so the first thing to try is time — and the one thing not to try is force.

    Oven fan keeps running after it is turned off

    A fan that carries on after the oven is off, sometimes for a long time. The maker publishes an article on it because it worries people, and on a built-in oven it is exactly what should happen — with two exceptions worth knowing.

    • The fan runs on after cooking
    • It runs for a very long time after a clean cycle
    • It has become louder than it was
    What it usually means
  • A baking tray of pale scones just out of the oven where the row at the back is clearly darker than the row at the front, set on a trivet on a white counter.

    Cakes rising crooked, one tray browning while another stays pale, or an oven that is simply not what it was. Sensor and convection fan long before elements — and some of this is not a repair at all.

    • It crept up rather than failing suddenly

    Steam oven will not steam

    A steam oven is a plumbed appliance with a boiler in it, and it has failures no other oven has. Two halves to this symptom, and which half you are in decides everything: it will not fill, or it will not empty.

    • No steam at all on a steam program

    • It has never been descaled
    What it usually means

    One zone, under load

    Induction zone cuts out during cooking

    A zone that drops out mid-cook while the others carry on, usually at high power and usually after a while. That pattern is almost always heat and installation rather than the coil, and there are three free checks before anybody quotes a board.

    • It happens at high power after several minutes
    • The same zone every time
    • The fan under the cooktop is running hard
    What it usually means

    A cooktop with no lights and no response, or a touch panel that ignores everything. Four free causes before any part, and one of them — half a supply — is not an appliance problem at all.

    Cracked cooktop glass

    A crack, a chip or a shatter in an induction or radiant surface. This page is short and blunt because the advice is: switch it off at the wall and stop using it. It is a safety matter rather than a cosmetic one.

    A cycle that ends with water in the drum, or clothes that come out soaking. Ordinary laundry work on machines this maker no longer sells here — which changes the parts conversation and nothing about the diagnosis.

    Cycles that take forever, or clothes still damp when the machine says it has finished. Two causes account for nearly all of it — the air cannot get out, or the machine cannot tell the load is dry — and a large share of both is free to check.

Why this archive matters more on this maker

A great deal of this equipment reports without a number.

A DishDrawer has no display at all: it flashes a pattern of program and modifier lights, and that pattern is the code. A refrigerator counts beeps and lights an LED — the maker’s own instruction is to count them, because five beeps is F5. An induction cooktop can show a bare E or Er with nothing after it. And not one of this maker’s forty-six cooktop guides carries a code table of any kind.

    Fifty-one machines, and forty of them are drawers.     The same situation as the washers: Fisher & Paykel lists no dryer for the United States today, and the ones in South Florida laundry rooms are still working and still repairable. What is worth knowing before you call is which kind you have — vented, condenser or heat pump — because the three fail in completely different places, and only one of them is about a duct.

    Eight machines, and every one of them is an Integrated column meant to stand beside a refrigerator column behind matching cabinet fronts. Seven of the eight carry an ice maker, and one is a triple-zone machine with three independently controlled compartments. That is the whole row, and this card would rather say so than pad it.

    Read this first: Fisher & Paykel no longer lists a washing machine for the United States. Its US support site has a laundry section with nothing in it, and the Products menu has no fabric care in it at all. The machines are still here — South Florida laundry rooms are full of them — and the maker still sells laundry parts and stacking kits. We repair the ones that are here, and we would rather tell you where the line falls than let you find out at the parts stage.

Why do you tell me how to fix things myself?

Because a real share of what arrives as a symptom is not a repair, and charging somebody $95 to be told their dishwasher filter was blocked is a poor way to earn a customer. The pages that say "this is free, here is how" are the same pages that say "and this part is not, here is what it costs". Both are more useful than a page that only knows how to book a visit.

My machine has no display. How do I tell you what is wrong?

Photograph it. On a DishDrawer the pattern of flashing lights is the code; on a refrigerator the number of beeps is the code. Ten seconds of video from a phone is worth more than a paragraph of description, and it survives the drive to the appointment.

Two of these pages sound like my problem.

Start with the one that mentions the specific thing — the noise, the light, the water, the smell. Those narrow fastest. If it is still ambiguous, book and describe both: the diagnosis is ours to make and you are not expected to have made it already.

Some of these say my appliance is working correctly.

Several of them do, and it is deliberate. A warm cabinet frame, a fan that runs on after the oven is off, wet plastics at the end of a dishwasher cycle, a heat pump dryer that is slower than a vented one — the maker publishes articles on all four because they are reported constantly, and all four are the design. We would rather repeat that than take the call.

How quickly should I call?

Water is the one that does not wait: a leak reaching cabinetry or a floor is a same-day call. Everything else on this list can generally wait a day, and a few of them — a fan that has got louder, a wine cabinet drifting — are better dealt with early than late, because catching them early is the cheaper version of the same repair.

Some of what arrives on these pages is the climate rather than the appliance. A condenser in a house a few blocks from the water collects salt with its dust, and a machine that runs continuously without arriving is usually telling you that before it is telling you anything else. An induction power board in a sealed island has nowhere to send its heat in August and shuts a zone down to protect itself. Humidity puts frost around the drawers of a freezer whose seal has taken a set. A laundry closet with no airflow and a duct that turns twice before it reaches an outside wall makes a healthy dryer slow.

Some of it is the way this equipment is built. Integrated machines carry cabinet doors on adjustable brackets, so a crooked front is often hardware rather than an appliance.
