Read what it is showing
A3 on a DishDrawer and A20 on a drop-door both mean the machine could not drain, and both have published owner steps. E3, E4, F3 and F4 on the drop-door line say the same thing in a different alphabet. Knowing which one you have starts the visit ahead of the beginning.

The filter, properly
Not glanced at. On a drawer the filter and the filter plate both come out, and a filter that is clean on top can be blocked underneath. The maker names this first in its own instruction for a reason.

The path out of the machine
The drain hose, its high loop, the connection at the sink trap, waste tee or standpipe, and — if the dishwasher was fitted after a disposal — the knock-out plug that is sometimes still in place years later. Several of those are outside the appliance and free to check.

Tested under load, with the check valve looked at alongside it. A pump that empties the tub and lets it fill back is a valve, not a motor, and they are different figures.

Why the visit starts at the sink
Because a real share of these calls end there. A crimped hose, a loop that has come down, a waste tee that has silted up, or a disposal knock-out plug that was never removed will all stop a perfectly healthy pump from emptying a tub. It will not drain and I can hear it trying.
Then the motor is turning and something is in its way. In order: the filter and the filter plate, the drain hose and its loop, the connection under the sink, and on a machine fitted after a disposal, the plug in the disposal inlet. Three of those four are outside the machine and all four cost nothing to look at.
What does A3 mean exactly?
On a DishDrawer it means the drawer could not drain, and the maker publishes the causes: the filter clogged or seated wrongly, or the drain hose blocked or kinked at the sink trap, waste tee or standpipe. It also publishes the way to clear it — press once to stop the beeping, press again to clear, press to resume. On a drop-door machine the same idea arrives as A20 and the meaning is drain, not filter.
Can I run the machine while it is doing this?
Better not to. A machine that cannot drain will refill on top of dirty water, and on a drawer a partial drain leaves standing water where the seal sits. It will not damage the appliance overnight, but it will make the next cycle worse and it makes the diagnosis harder because the evidence gets washed away.
The drawer smells even though it drains.
That is usually the filter and the sump rather than a drain problem. Debris that gets past a filter sits in the bottom of the drawer between cycles, and in a warm kitchen that is enough. Cleaning the filter and running a hot cycle with no dishes fixes a large share of these before anybody is called.
