Symptom

Fisher & Paykel refrigerator not cooling

The fresh-food compartment drifting up while the freezer stays cold. That combination is good news more often than not, because a working freezer proves the sealed system is doing its job and puts the problem somewhere ordinary.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Two thermometers, twenty minutes

One in each compartment. Numbers, not impressions.

  2. 02

    Clear the vents inside

The openings that move air between compartments are easy to bury under a full shelf.

  3. 03

    Look at the condenser

Behind the grille or at the back. If it is grey with dust, that is a real finding and cleaning it is free.

  4. 04

    Listen for the fan

With the door open and the switch held in, or when it cycles. Silence where there should be a fan is a diagnosis.

  5. 05

    Then book the visit

Give us both temperatures, the model number, and whether the machine is integrated behind a cabinet panel.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Freezer cold, refrigerator warm”
  • “The machine runs constantly and never arrives”
  • “It got worse over days rather than overnight”
A technical manual open flat on a work surface with a spiral notepad beside it, both blurred past legibility, a small screwdriver acting as a page weight, cool overhead daylight.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Fisher & Paykel refrigerator not cooling

The fastest diagnosis is the code

Measure both compartments with a thermometer rather than trusting the display, and write the two numbers down. A cold freezer with a warm refrigerator is a completely different diagnosis from a cabinet where both are warm, and it is the single most useful thing you can establish before anybody arrives. While you are there, check nothing is blocking the vents inside the cabinet and nothing is stacked against the grille outside it.

Where the cold actually comes from

One evaporator makes the cold and air moves it to where it is needed. That means a warm refrigerator with a cold freezer is an air problem — a fan, a damper, a blocked vent or ice on the evaporator — and only a cabinet where both compartments are warm points at the sealed system.

The local part

A condenser in South Florida sheds heat into a warmer room for more of the year than one anywhere else in the country, and within a few blocks of the water it collects salt with the dust. It is one of the very few things on this list an owner can improve without a technician, and it is the first thing we look at on a machine that runs continuously.

How this maker tells you

Not with a number on a screen. Its refrigerators count beeps and flash an LED, and the maker groups the codes behind those into temperature and sensor, fan, heater and ambient, ice maker and water, and control and display. Count the beeps before you clear the alarm — that number puts the visit in a named family before anybody drives anywhere.

Questions about fisher & Paykel refrigerator not cooling

The freezer is fine and only the refrigerator is warm.

That is the good version of this problem. A working freezer proves the compressor, the condenser and the refrigerant are doing their job, so what is wrong is between the two compartments: a fan, a damper, a defrost cycle that has stopped clearing the evaporator, or a sensor reporting the wrong thing. All of those are ordinary parts.

It is running all the time.

Two candidates and both are checkable. A condenser that cannot shed heat — dust, salt, or an integrated installation with poor airflow around it — or a door that is not sealing and is letting warm room air in continuously. Neither is expensive, and both are the reason we look at the outside of the machine before the inside.

Everything went warm at once, overnight.

Check for a power event before assuming a failure. A cut or a surge can leave a control in a state it will not leave by itself, and a full minute at the breaker is free. If it comes back warm after that, it is a genuine failure and we should look.
