Symptom

Fisher & Paykel burner clicks and will not light

A burner that sparks and never catches. The good news is in the symptom itself: if it is sparking, the ignition side is alive, and the problem is gas reaching the burner or the burner itself — which is very often something you can put right in five minutes.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Is every burner affected

One burner is that burner. All of them is the supply or the module, and that is a different search.

  2. 02

Cap off, cap back on squarely

Cold. It should drop into place without being persuaded.

  3. 03

    Look at the ports

All the way round the crown. Blocked ones are visible and clearable.

  4. 04

    Check the others spark

Sparking everywhere means the ignition module is fine, and that is half the diagnosis for free.

  5. 05

    Then book the visit

Say whether it sparks, whether it is one burner or all, and whether it started after a clean.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “It clicks steadily and nothing lights”
  • “It started right after the cooktop was cleaned”
  • “One burner only, or all of them”
Three small mechanical parts arranged on a clean white surface in bright light — a compact geared motor, a length of moulded rubber seal and a pair of brass valve stems — photographed from above, no packaging, no labels.

About Fisher & Paykel burner clicks and will not light

The fastest diagnosis is the code

Let the burner cool, lift the cap off and put it back squarely — a cap a fraction proud is the single commonest cause and it happens every time a cooktop is cleaned. While it is off, check the ports around the crown are clear; a boil-over blocks them and a pin or a toothpick clears them. If the cooktop has been washed recently, give it time: moisture in a burner will stop it lighting until it dries out.

Sparking is good news

It means the ignition module, the electrode and the wiring are doing their job. What is left is gas arriving at the burner and the burner being assembled correctly — and the second of those is the answer far more often than the first.

The cleaning connection

A large share of these calls start the day after somebody cleaned the cooktop. Caps come off to be washed and go back a fraction proud or rotated; ports get wet; crowns get put back on the wrong burner. None of it is damage and all of it stops a burner lighting.

Twenty-nine gas machines

This maker lists fifteen gas ranges, sixteen dual-fuel ranges, thirteen gas cooktops and eleven professional rangetops for the United States, in natural gas and LPG versions. The burners and the ignition are shared across them, so everything here applies whichever of those you have.

Questions about fisher & Paykel burner clicks and will not light

It started right after I cleaned the cooktop.

Then it is almost certainly the cap, and it is free. Burner caps sit in one orientation and one position; put back a fraction proud or rotated, the gas comes out where the spark is not. Lift it off cold and let it drop into place rather than pressing it down.

None of the burners will light, and there is no power cut.

On a gas machine with electric ignition, that is usually electrical rather than gas — a tripped breaker, or a range unplugged during a cleaning. Worth knowing: these can be lit by hand during an outage, and a burner that lights with a match but not electrically has just told you where the problem is.

It clicks even after it has lit.

Usually not broken. These burners watch for a flame and spark again if they think it has gone: a pot boiling over, a draft from an open slider, or a cap a fraction out of place will all trigger it. If it still clicks with a clean, dry, correctly seated cap and a steady flame, the sensing side needs looking at rather than the ignition side.
