Fisher & Paykel induction zone cuts out during cooking
A zone that drops out mid-cook while the others carry on, usually at high power and usually after a while. That pattern is almost always heat and installation rather than the coil, and there are three free checks before anybody quotes a board.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
No airflow under the cooktop
The commonest cause by a distance, and it is carpentry rather than a repair. A board with nowhere to send its heat protects itself, forever.
Appliance installation & re-fit from $175 -
The pan
Warped, undersized or barely magnetic. Free to test and it explains a zone that behaves badly with one pan and perfectly with another.
Induction cooktop repair from $225 -
Things stored under the cooktop
A drawer packed tight against the underside blocks the cooling path. Free, and very common in a kitchen with limited storage.
Appliance installation & re-fit from $175 -
The cooling fan
A fan that has slowed cannot clear the heat even when the ventilation is right.
Induction cooktop repair from $225 -
That zone's power board or sensor
The actual repair, and deliberately fifth. A zone that fails with everything else clear is a genuine component failure.

In five minutes
Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Look under the counter
Ventilation openings, and whether anything is packed against the appliance.
-
02
Swap the pan
Same zone, different pan, same power setting. If the problem moves with the pan, you have your answer.
-
03
Swap the zone
Same pan on a different zone. If it fails there too, the pan is the cause.
-
04
Do not switch it off and leave it
These are diagnosed under load. A cooktop that has been off for two days tells a technician nothing.
-
05
Then book the visit
Say which zone, at what power, after how long, and whether the cabinet underneath has ventilation.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Fisher & Paykel induction zone cuts out during cooking
The fastest diagnosis is the code
Open the cabinet under the cooktop and look for the ventilation the installation instructions asked for. Each induction position has a power board beneath it, those boards make heat, and a fan pulls air through the cabinet to remove it — in a sealed island there is often nowhere for that air to come from. Then try the same zone with a different pan: a warped or barely magnetic base makes one zone misbehave while everything else is perfect.
What actually fails on induction
Very little, and that is the point of the technology — no flame, no element, nothing to burn out. What there is: a power board per zone, the fan and airflow that keep it cool, the sensors watching the surface, and the touch control. The commonest complaint by a wide margin is a zone dropping out, and the commonest answer is heat.
The three free tests
Look under the counter. Change the pan. Move the pan to another zone. Between them they identify the cause of most of these before anybody is paid anything, and two of the three outcomes are not appliance repairs at all.
Seventeen cooktops and seven ranges
This maker lists seventeen induction cooktops and seven induction ranges for the United States, including SmartZone machines that bridge two zones into one. Everything on this page applies to all of them.

Questions about fisher & Paykel induction zone cuts out during cooking
Why would ventilation matter on a cooktop?
Because induction makes its heat in the pan and its electronics underneath. Every zone has a power board below it, and those boards run warm even though the cooktop surface is not what is being heated. A fan pulls air through the cabinet to cool them; in a sealed island with no openings, that air does not exist. The cooktop then protects itself by shutting a zone down, indefinitely, with nothing broken.
It only happens in summer.
That is the same story with a season attached. A marginal installation copes in February and does not in August, when the kitchen is warmer and the air being pulled through the cabinet is warmer too. It is one of the clearest signals that the answer is airflow rather than a component.
What does E6 mean?
The maker groups its induction codes rather than publishing one meaning each: E2, E6, U400 and E8 are the temperature or power family. Its instruction for all of them is the same — power off at the supply, wait a minute, restart, and book a repair if it returns. A plain E or Er with nothing after it means the electronics overheated and shut down, which points back at airflow again.
