Symptom

Fisher & Paykel ice maker not making ice

Four complaints that arrive as one: nothing at all, too slowly, cubes too small, or ice that tastes wrong. The first two things to check are the filter and the water pressure reaching the machine, not the ice maker.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

  • The water filter

Past its life, it restricts flow. Implicated in slow ice, small cubes and bad taste — three of the four complaints on this page.

  • Water pressure at the machine

A partly closed valve, a kinked supply line, or genuine low pressure. The ice maker freezes exactly what it received.

  • The fill valve

The part that actually lets water in. A machine that never fills and one that fills too little are two versions of the same component.

  • Freezer temperature

An ice maker harvests on temperature. A compartment a couple of degrees warm slows everything down without ever looking broken.

  • The ice maker module

A machine that fills and never ejects. Deliberately last, because it is the part people replace first and it is the answer least often.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Change the filter

If in doubt, change it. It is cheaper than the diagnostic that finds it.

  2. 02

    Open the valve fully

Behind or beneath the machine, or under the sink. Half-closed valves are surprisingly common.

  3. 03

    Empty and wash the bin

Especially for a taste complaint. Ice holds odor long after its cause is gone.

  4. 04

    Measure the freezer

A thermometer between packages. Slow ice with a warm freezer is a cooling problem wearing an ice-maker costume.

  5. 05

    Then book the visit

Say which of the four complaints it is, and when the filter was last changed.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “The bin is empty and stays empty”
  • “Cubes have got smaller or hollow”
  • “Production has slowed over weeks”
Two hands in nitrile gloves turning an old discoloured plastic pump housing over in the light, the part clearly worn, a blurred kitchen counter behind.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Fisher & Paykel ice maker not making ice

The fastest diagnosis is the code

Find out when the water filter was last changed, and change it if the answer is more than a year or you do not know. Then check the shut-off valve behind or under the machine is fully open — a valve half closed during some other work years ago produces exactly this and nothing else. Both are free, and between them they end a real share of these calls.

Four complaints, one page, one starting point

Nothing at all, slowly, too small, or tasting wrong. The maker publishes a separate article for each, and they lead to different parts — but three of the four begin at the same place: the filter and the water pressure reaching the machine. That is why this page starts there and not at the ice maker.

Why the filter comes first every time

It is implicated in three of the four complaints, it has a defined life, this maker fits an indicator for it, and it costs a fraction of a service call. A visit that starts anywhere else on an ice complaint may be about to replace a part that was working.

The honest limitation

Ice is the one repair that cannot be proved in an appointment — a machine takes hours to fill a bin. We prove the fill and the harvest on site and tell you exactly what to expect by evening, which is the most that can honestly be promised.

Questions about fisher & Paykel ice maker not making ice

The cubes have gone small.

Almost always water rather than freezing. A partly closed shut-off, a filter at the end of its life, or genuine low pressure will all make the machine fill less than it should, and it freezes what it got. Those three cost nothing to check and they are the answer most of the time.

It makes ice but very slowly.

Same water causes, plus freezer temperature. An ice maker harvests when the mold reaches a set temperature, so a compartment two degrees warm stretches every cycle. If ice slowed at the same time as anything else changed in the cabinet, say so when you book.

The ice tastes of the refrigerator.

Ice is frozen water sitting in an air stream for days, so it absorbs everything. In order: the filter and its date, anything strong and uncovered in the cabinet, and the bin itself, which holds odor long after the cause has gone. If a new filter and a washed bin do not fix it, the supply line is next.
