Filters, both of them where there are two
A heat pump dryer has a lint filter and a second finer filter or heat exchanger behind it, and the second one is the one nobody knows about. On a vented machine it is the filter and the housing under it.

The duct run, end to end
On a vented dryer this is the whole path to the outside wall: the flexible connection behind the machine, the run through the wall or ceiling, and the flap at the far end that birds and lint both like. It is not the appliance and it is very often the answer.

The condenser or heat exchanger
On a ductless machine this is what the duct would have been. A heat exchanger packed with fine lint makes a machine that dries slower every month without ever reporting anything.

The sensor bars
Two metal strips inside the drum that read how wet the load is. Fabric softener leaves a film on them, and a machine that cannot read the load ends the cycle early with damp clothes. Cleaned with a little detergent on a cloth, then tested.

Two causes, most of the calls
The air cannot get out — filters, internal duct, heat exchanger, or on a vented machine the whole run to the outside wall. Or the machine cannot tell the load is dry — the moisture-sensing bars in the drum, coated with fabric-softener residue. Between them they account for most of what arrives described as "the dryer is not working properly".

Why it matters beyond the laundry
A restricted dryer runs hot, trips its own protection, and works its element and its motor harder than they were meant to be worked. Airflow is the cheapest maintenance on this site and the one that prevents the most expensive repairs on the page next to it.

Clothes are still damp but the cycle has ended.
That is moisture sensing rather than heat. These machines end a cycle when the sensor says the load is dry, so bars coated in fabric-softener residue end it early. Cleaning them with a little detergent on a cloth is worth doing before anybody comes out. If it still ends early on clean bars, the sensing circuit or the control is the repair.
My heat pump dryer takes forever.
It is meant to be slower than a vented machine — that is the trade for drying at a low temperature. What is not normal is a machine that has become slower than it used to be. The order is both lint filters, then the heat exchanger behind them, then the sensors. Two of those three are owner-cleanable, which is exactly why we ask before we quote.
How often should the duct be cleaned?
More often here than the general advice suggests, because the duct runs are often long and the air is damp. If you cannot feel strong airflow at the outside vent with the machine running, it needs doing regardless of when it was last done. It is also a fire matter, not only an efficiency one.
Why is this the cheapest row on the site?
Because most of it is not a part. Filters, ducts, heat exchangers and sensor bars are cleaned rather than replaced, and a large share of these visits end without an order. We would rather charge a small figure often than a large one for a component that was never the problem.
