Find out whether the machine has protected itself
These machines have flood detection. A dishwasher that stopped mid-cycle and now refuses to start may not be broken at all — it may have seen water in the base and shut itself down on purpose, which looks exactly like a dead machine and is the opposite.

Look where the water is, not where it landed
Water runs. On a drawer the lid seal sends it down the outside of the drawer to the front; on a drop-door machine a door gasket sends it out at the bottom of the door and a hose sends it out at the back. Where it appears is the last thing that happens, not the first.

Why a leak on a drawer looks different
A DishDrawer seals at the top of the tub. Water that gets past that seal has nowhere to go but down the outside of the drawer and out under the front — which is why the classic report on these machines is water on the floor and a spotless interior. On a conventional drop-door machine the same puddle points at a door gasket or a hose instead.
What is checked, in order
- Flood detection — has the machine already shut itself down, and is there water in the base pan
- The lid seal and the drawer seal, read rather than replaced on sight
- The fill and drain connections, including the flexible ones that move every time a drawer opens
- Detergent quantity, because foam pushes past a seal that is doing its job

My machine stopped and will not restart. Is that the leak?
Very possibly, and it is the first thing we check. Flood detection on these machines shuts the appliance down when it sees water where it should not be, and it will not simply forget. On a drop-door machine the maker prints F30 for it and says to turn the water and power off and call. Look for water in the base pan or under the machine before assuming a control board.
There is a lot of foam and now there is water.
Those two are related more often than people expect. Excess detergent makes foam, foam pushes past seals that hold water perfectly well, and the machine reads the result as a leak. On a DishDrawer the maker's own guidance is a teaspoon at most, and there is an auto-recovery program that will try to clear foam by itself. Run a cycle with no detergent and see whether the water comes back before you book a seal.
Can I use the other drawer while this one is leaking?
Usually yes, and that is one of the advantages of a double. The drawers have their own seals and their own water paths. What we would not do is keep running the leaking drawer, because water in the base is what triggers the shutdown that makes the whole machine unusable.
Is a leaking seal always a replacement?
No. A fair share of them are a seal that has picked up debris or come out of its channel, and both are put right without a part. We look before we order — a seal replaced on sight when the real cause was a cracked hose is a visit you pay for twice.
