## A great deal of this equipment reports without a number.

A **DishDrawer** has no display at all: it flashes a pattern of program and modifier lights, and that pattern is the code. A **refrigerator** counts beeps and lights an LED — the maker’s own instruction is to count them, because five beeps is F5. An **induction cooktop** can show a bare E or Er with nothing after it. Why do you tell me how to fix things myself? — Because a real share of what arrives as a symptom is not a repair, and charging somebody $95 to be told their dishwasher filter was blocked is a poor way to earn a customer. The pages that say "this is free, here is how" are the same pages that say "and this part is not, here is what it costs". Both are more useful than a page that only knows how to book a visit.

My machine has no display. How do I tell you what is wrong? — Photograph it. On a DishDrawer the pattern of flashing lights is the code; on a refrigerator the number of beeps is the code. Ten seconds of video from a phone is worth more than a paragraph of description, and it survives the drive to the appointment.

Two of these pages sound like my problem. — Start with the one that mentions the specific thing — the noise, the light, the water, the smell. Those narrow fastest. If it is still ambiguous, book and describe both: the diagnosis is ours to make and you are not expected to have made it already.

Some of these say my appliance is working correctly. — Several of them do, and it is deliberate. A warm cabinet frame, a fan that runs on after the oven is off, wet plastics at the end of a dishwasher cycle, a heat pump dryer that is slower than a vented one — the maker publishes articles on all four because they are reported constantly, and all four are the design. We would rather repeat that than take the call.

How quickly should I call? — Water is the one that does not wait: a leak reaching cabinetry or a floor is a same-day call. Everything else on this list can generally wait a day, and a few of them — a fan that has got louder, a wine cabinet drifting — are better dealt with early than late, because catching them early is the cheaper version of the same repair.

## What goes wrong with Fisher & Paykel appliances here

Some of what arrives on these pages is the climate rather than the appliance. A condenser in a house a few blocks from the water collects salt with its dust, and a machine that runs continuously without arriving is usually telling you that before it is telling you anything else. An induction power board in a sealed island has nowhere to send its heat in August and shuts a zone down to protect itself. Humidity puts frost around the drawers of a freezer whose seal has taken a set.
